Modern Research Turns Archive Data into Knowledge
Archivists have a goal – to impart knowledge and make it accessible. The internet helps them, as digital and retrodigitized collections are easily accessible to the public. A game changer with the exponentially growing amount of information.
Finding your way around the mass of information is not so easy when terms are ambiguous. A search for "Martin Müller" brings thousands of results. And what about M. Müller or Müller Martin and Martin André Müller? Is that the same person?
More data does not equal more information. And certainly not more knowledge. Fortunately, there are numerous researchers who are tackling these issues.
As part of the "GLAM Technical Meetup #2: Practical Applications of Machine Learning", three approaches were presented on how modern research advances archivists.
Laura Rettig is researching in the Switch project "Research Data Connectome" for THE Martin Müller. Information is derived from archive contents using machine learning, and with Connectome, they can be linked together from different sources.
Tarun Chadha is conducting research in the "E-Periodica Next Level Access" project of the ETH Library to recognize the relationships between people and make it an exciting experience for users.
And how are such research results usable in your archive?
With Archipanion, Markus Stauffiger shows an example of such a transfer in the area of multimedia archive search. Archipanion bridges the gap between the latest machine learning research from the University of Basel and users in everyday archive life. Suddenly thousands of photos and films are easily searchable and accessible, all without in-depth indexing.
Innovative archivists from the PTT Archive, the Museum of Communication, the Swiss Federal Archives, the Bern City Archives, Heiko Schuldt and team at the University of Basel and 4eyes GmbH - together towards the goal.
A great event, with many exciting impressions, discussions and many new ideas! We are already looking forward to the next edition!
